(I wrote this article two years ago when I started to edit Wikipedia. Things were more relaxed then since increasingly more spammers try to take advantage of it recently.)

Here is another way you can preach on the net—by contributing to Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

As you may know, Wikipedia is an editable encyclopedia based on the open source (freeware) concept. This means many voluntary contributors and public domain material, though you can use external links to copyrighted material/web sites. There is a lot to improve and write about Krishna conscious topics. Just pick your favorite subject and expand and / or amend existing articles. Needed is good spelling, style and thoughtfulness. You can register but don't have to (your IP number is logged). For more info please refer directly to the Wiki.

Advantages

  • In a class or public preaching program you can address a few, tens or maybe hundreds. In chatrooms or forums many more but with rather short-term impact. Great impact (due to amount of visitor traffic) on Wiki is guaranteed, especially in major articles.
  • You need neither fixed internet connection, money, time, nor skills to run and promote a website, what to speak of resources to publish a book.
  • Wiki preaching (or rather teaching) has and will have much wider and longer lasting impact due to the systematic arrangement of Wiki and its popularity. This is also due to the fact that major encyclopedias like Britannica are adopting paid access.
  • Wiki's popularity caused an emergence by many sites copying its contents, either fully or partially, and often imitating its name: centipedia.com, intelipedia.com, smartpedia.com, etc. Whatever you write on Wiki should appear on them, sooner or later.
  • Your article may not be accepted by BTG due to space restriction or topic covered. Won't happen in Wiki.

Srila Prabhupada wanted devotees to write articles about their realizations of KC:

"All students should be encouraged to write some article after reading Srimad-Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita, and Teachings of Lord Caitanya. They should realize the information, and they must present their assimilation in their own words. Otherwise, how they can be preachers?" (letter to Brahmananda, July 1, 1969)

"I want all our students to write articles for our transcendental magazine. That is practical." (SP letter to Satsvarupa, Allahabad 11 January, 1971)

"If you sit down and write some article on Krsna, that means you have to concentrate on Krsna's activities or Krsna's devotees' activities, and that very process will purify your heart. Therefore we always recommend to our students that you write articles, read our magazine, read our book." (SB lecture, 6.2.12-14, Allahabad, January 17, 1971)

"If you are writing poems and songs, that's alright, you can do it also, but if you can write articles for our Back to Godhead magazine, that is better, that is solid preaching work." (SP letter to Billy Reyburne, Vrindavan 12 March, 1972)

"A devotee may also direct anger against bogus gurus and other misleaders of the people. When a devotee hears bad propaganda against devotional service, he may write articles against the demons or actively preach in another way." (Satsvarupa Das Goswami, 26 Qualities of a Devotee, 16)

Internet increasingly grows. Let's hope that Srila Prabhupada will be pleased that his mood is picked upon more and more:

"We should always be eager to find out such nice ways to spread this Movement. This will automatically bring joy to the devotees as well as to the nondevotees." (SP letter to Jagadisa - Bombay 17 November, 1970)

"Rather, our main business is to train up men to be self sufficient and competent in many ways to carry on the preaching work, not to make them into specialists or to minimize their responsibility by centralizing everything." (SP letter to Damodara - Bombay, India 9 January, 1973)

Srila Prabhupada:

"If we keep ourselves purely on the standard of Lord Caitanya's order, then the chanting of the Holy Names will descend as powerfully as during the time of Jagai and Madhai."
