Internet Preaching

Using the Internet to Preach

The internet is becoming more and more important in our lives—devotees and others alike. We use it not only for email and the latest news anymore, but increasingly for entertainment, discussions, and to find new friends.

On many well-known discussion forums seekers search for the purpose of life, or approach members of Skype and other IRC-channels who indicate that they are available for chat-sessions.

This offers an opportunity for devotees to preach, distribute e- and printed books, and finally "make devotees" out of some fortunate, lost souls.

The database for devotees interested in online preaching, stating their IM IDs isn't working at present; trying to fix it as soon as I can...

Cell Phones and Bhagavad-Gita

Here is a message from HH Bhakticaru Maharaja to the PAMHO conference BCS Istagosthi, encouraging us to pay as much attention to Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-Gita as to our cell phones. While there is plenty of room for improvement in my Gita study habits, I don't pay much attention to my mobile phone; but I see many others, teenagers mostly, fiddling around with their phones all the time.

For many cell phones have become indispensible accessories; they would as soon leave home naked than leave without their phones. While it would be good to carry Bhagavad-Gita with us at all times, I doubt if many will adopt this practice. For those who own an iPhone or iPod-touch, though, this has become a lot easier now, thanks to Vinod Bihari Prabhu, who adapted some of the texts available at vedabase.net for use with these devices.

Looking for Devotee Online Contacts

Yesterday the article "I wish to chat with some iskcon devotees online" was posted on dandavats.com. It's a short message:

Shrinivas: hi, my name is shri. i am a 30 yr old working man in australia, sprititually inclined but you can say not fully motivated as yet. I wish to chat with some iskcon devotees online and make some friends. would you know of some chat site on which i can do that. i would be very thankful if you can guide me with this.

have a nice day,
yours sincerely,
shri.

I don't know if devotees who actively preach on IRC channels (Skype or whatever) are reading this group's posts; if yes, I don't think it would be difficult to find Shrinivas online. In any case, I'll post a comment to his message on dandavats, inviting him to this group.

I'm adding a field "IRC identities" to namahatta.org's user profiles. Registered users can use that to share one or more online-identities, which can be listed on this group-page. If anyone is interested in a more organized exchange of internet contacts and preaching details, I would be happy to set up some online-structure for that purpose.

Considering my experience trying to get readers to actually do something at namahatta.org, i.e., contribute stories, offer comments and opinions, or use any 'interactive' features, I'll wait until somebody tells me (comment or email) that they actually are interested before I do anything ...

Skype - Technical and other Details

Skype is a relatively new and extremely popular technology. It's different from other VoIP (voice-over-internet-protocol) networks as it doesn't rely on central servers, but establishes a peer-to-peer network, which can easily grow with the number of users connected. [Lots of additional information is available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype.]

The software and basic membership in the Skype-network are free (see download-links in the side-bar), allowing over 100 million users free chat-, audio-, and video-calls over the internet. This includes text-based group-chat with up to one-hundred, and conference-calls among up to ten participants. Another interesting (free) feature is Skypecast: groups of up to one-hundred members can be hosted, in the form of a lecture (one person talks and the others listen), or everybody can talk (or chant) simultaneously.

A Message from HH BVV Narasimha Swami

I thought I was in for a quiet time in Mayapur, with the Gaura Purnima Festival over and even Jananivasa Prabhu and Pankajangari Prabhu off to Jagannath Puri with Bhakti Purusottama Maharaja and the sankirtana brahmacaris. But that was before I entered the Congregational Preaching office. It was there that I learned about Skypecast and how it operates. I was told that today we are going to speak on "the art of loving God" and we have to start in a few minutes. I was handed a small mike and earphones and told that now we have an audience.

Brainstorming on Skypecast Preaching

By Kaunteya das

While I am typing this piece, Vidvan Gauranga Prabhu is talking on the Skypecast: “The Secrets of the Medieval Mystics of India.” The introduction is: “Realized sages, free from all mental conditionings, have left jewels of experienced knowledge. Such treasure of wisdom helps us to solve our problems and fulfill our deepest desires. Their message is that happiness is possible.”

People appear receptive and respectful, asking a broad range of related questions. We already distributed four Science of Self-Realization books, pdf format.

I am seeing more and more how we can flood the internet with transcendental knowledge through this medium.

Skype Preaching: The Next Frontier

By Sri Radha Govinda dasi

Making 250 contacts of potential devotees in a few weeks? Finding people to whom you can preach freely? Making connections without physical effort? Identifying people who are open to listen to you about Krishna consciousness? Talking and chanting online with people? All this is just a Skype-cast away!

Let me tell you about my experience with Skype. Skype is a free program (download at www.skype.com) that lets you chat, talk, share files, and have voice and video conferencing—all for free—with any individual or group among the many millions of Skype users.

And of course Skype is also very useful for communicating among devotees.

Two months ago I was chatting with a friend on Skype. I switched to the ”Skype me” mode, in which you become “visible” to whoever is online (as I write this there are more than eight million Skype users online). Dozens of people started to send messages and call. I realized that there are thousands of people who are open for talks and discussions. I didn’t have to find them—they would find me. I started holding regular chats with some contacts, especially those who wanted to know more about Vedic psychology or even directly about Krishna. In less than three weeks I made hundred contacts with interested people.

Sharing Skype IDs and Interests

This request for IM (internet messenger) association appeared on chakra recently:

Krishna-katha through Skype?

by Gita Govinda dasi and Indranuja dasa
posted 5 December 2007

InternetI am interested in association through Skype, particularly Srimad-Bhagavatam classes and bhajanas/kirtanas.

My Skype ID is: gitagovindadasi91
E-mail: mantra4utoo@yahoo.com

Please e-mail me here with your city, the schedule, and the conference number link. I am currently in Osaka, Japan, and would love to be able to hear from sadhus all over the world.

Without Krishna-katha this life is useless. Actually my gurudeva, Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja, said in a lecture, "Without Krishna-prema your life is useless—useless!" Hare Krishna.

I look foward to hearing from all the "nectar bears" out there. You know who you are. Thanks.

Skype ID: gitagovindadasi91

At namahatta.org we have a content channel named Internet Preaching, which I created for devotees to share their contact details, ideas, and experiences using the internet in general, and IM services in particular.

At this address you can see a list of devotees and their internet messenger-IDs (as of now, there's only Gita Govinda Mataji's. Please add yours). And here you can submit your own contact details and explain what type of preaching or association you are interested in. You don't even have to create a user account for this. (However, if later you want to edit the info about yourself, you'll need an account with our website.)

Got Broadband? Plant Bhakti Creepers via Live Chat

During Janmastami time, Krishna.com received more than 10,000 unique visitors per day… Live chat was so busy we couldn’t keep up. I had five chat windows open at the same time and more people coming. It has slowed down a little since then, we’re back to a normal 4000 - 5000 unique visitors per day… and the live help requests are still pouring in.

So rather than hog all the mercy for myself, I am writing this short piece to encourage you to get involved. Plant and water the seeds of Krishna Bhakti in the hearts of eager Live Help seekers on Krishna.com.

Govinda Prabhu, one of our live help volunteers from India, shares the following:

“When I read the various questions we get on live help I can get a better understanding of how large the preaching field is, and how much more we could do if we had the resources.

“So often aspiring devotees write to us, needing help with devotional service. They don’t live near a temple and they have very little understanding about how to perform devotional service. It is so hard for people like this to make spiritual advancement. They don’t have devotee association, they can’t take part in kirtana, and there is no prasadam for them to consume. The only guidance they have is Prabhupada’s books. But what if they have questions? What if they need encouragment? That’s where we, the live helpers, are so important. We can give those devotees the guidance they need.

Preaching Channels and Strategies on the Internet

Bhakta Jan (VEDA - Vedic Knowledge Online) published these articles about his preaching experience on different internet-forums on our late ~/groups web site. This is meant as a starting point for others to add their own experience and comments.

Everybody can post comments to Jan's articles and, if you've registered an account and joined the Internet Preaching content-channel (subscribe), you can add your own articles to this 'online-book,' or post separate articles in this channel.

(Sorry, because of obnoxious spam-bots I'll have to personally approve your user-account; normally that doesn't take more than a couple of hours, though. Subscribing to one of our content-channels as reg. user happens instantly.)

This book is an introduction to different internet-forums and chat-services, and if you have experience preaching in one of these, you should add them as comments or new pages to this book. For other subjects concerning internet-preaching you should probably post a new article ('page') here.

At Pariprashnena.com, an un-censored discussion forum for devotees, you'll find devotees interested in and practicing internet preaching, and if you're looking for the latest internet technologies, there's Worldsankirtan, a Google-group of devotees with experience and different areas of expertise in internet related subjects.

The Virtual Temple: You’ll never chant alone again

Chanting on sacred beads: our link with Krishna and the Vaishnavas

I’ve been having fun with our new online ‘virtual temple’ for members of the congregation here in Britain. Of course, being online anyone in the world can take advantage of it, but so far we’ve had our little virtual temple filled with devotees from various parts of the UK. For me it’s an exciting new forum, although I’m aware that technologically speaking, linking up various members of a forum online with voice and visuals has been available for some years.

Let’s Give some Love to this Planet

By Sri Radha Govinda dasi

“It’s been a very illuminating, enlightening, and adventurous preaching on Skype,” says Rahul, an intelligent devotee residing in Mumbai who holds an M.Phil. in Labor Studies. Rahul has been working on organizing these Skype programs with me, which he enjoys, and also feels that it’s his duty to spread awareness of Krishna consciousness. He has been a backbone in organizing regular Skypecasts. He is a very organized person who is also experienced and expert in dealing with people.

In one of our previous Skypecasts our topic was “Mantra Meditation,” and fortune brought us to meet H.G. Radha-Syamasundar Prabhu from Cebu, Philippines.

On the 15th I suggested that we feature the topic “Krishna, the Supreme God,” which brought in 45 seeking souls to participate. We had Lehel share his maha-mantra tune for us, and I was surprised to learn that he came up with it in just a few hours. (A few weeks ago I met Lehel on Skype. He’s a computer-game animator who also plays music. We had several discussions, and he then decided to try chanting the maha-mantra.)

Yesterday I Was Preaching in Egypt ...

By Kaunteya Das

Yes, I was chatting with a Dr. Mohammed, apparently a devout Muslim but also an intellectually inquisitive individual. At the beginning he had trouble accepting the idea of God having a form and being a person (and I understand him: in my dictionary the main definitions of “person” are: 1) a human being; 2) a human body).

What happened is that my wife, Sri Radha Govinda Dasi, was doing her skype preaching as usual, in the “skype me” mode, open for anyone who wanted to contact her and chat. She had already introduced Dr. Mohammed to different Vaisnava sites. On mayapur.com he saw the photos of Sri Sri Radha-Madhava and went into a mild crisis. He wasn’t able to adjust his conception of God with … well, God Himself. So an educated argument ensued. Prompted by my wife I also jumped into the dialogue.
