By Kaunteya das While I am typing this piece, Vidvan Gauranga Prabhu is talking on the Skypecast: “The Secrets of the Medieval Mystics of India.” The introduction is: “Realized sages, free from all mental conditionings, have left jewels of experienced knowledge. Such treasure of wisdom helps us to solve our problems and fulfill our deepest desires. Their message is that happiness is possible.” People appear receptive and respectful, asking a broad range of related questions. We already distributed four Science of Self-Realization books, pdf format. I am seeing more and more how we can flood the internet with transcendental knowledge through this medium. Basically we could have three approaches to this skypecast preaching, with many sub-headings and styles:
It would be good to discuss and to coordinate the efforts of various devotees, to identify languages, time zones, and individual expertise and preferences. (This morning Kesavi Mataji, the gifted artist of the ISKCON Congregational Development Ministry, went into the “skype me” mode especially focusing on Japanese people (she is from Japan and she wants to preach to them). She sent pictures, also of Sri Sri Radha Madhava with the “Bird of Paradise” outfit she designed.) Anyway, back to Skypecast, one idea could be to have Srila Prabhupada preaching 24/7, by organizing casts (say every 20 minutes, round the clock) of his lectures. We could just give a short introduction of each and in most cases we could use the existing titles. Of course we could also promote the speeches of other ISKCON preachers and spiritual masters, the point being that, even if we don’t have anyone for speaking live, we could have the preaching going on. And we could always provide links for free books, relevant sites, and contact information. In this way we could systematically flood the system with Krishna consciousness.

Skypecast or Radio-show?
Submitted by phani on March 26, 2007 - 9:37am.I don't like the idea of playing SP-lectures during skypecasts - That's not what the medium is meant for. It's a bit like cheating: a Skypecast is a live-discussion where all participants are alive, now, at this time, on this planet. What you are suggesting is an online radio show. That's fine, but why produce a radio-show under the guise of a skypecast? Better find a live-person who can promote such radio-shows or SP lectures for download during a skypecast. If we don't have such a person, let's find one.
The idea to promote KC by all means, by hook or by crook, backfired already: it didn't help ISKCON's image in the public, and neither will such fake skypecasts, I'm afraid.
I think it's ok to talk about topics not directly related to KC, without mentioning up front that we are devotees. That should be done by devotees who have a genuine interest in the topic (yoga, vegetarianism, new-age, etc.). They should be able to sustain a discussion, even without referring to SP books & sastra in every 2nd sentence, though. That eventually such discussion will lead to vaisnava philosophy is unavoidable - it's the logical conclusion of every topic. But again, that should be done in a way that doesn't leave people with the impression they have been tricked into talking to someone they didn't want to talk to.

My first response was a bit rash, I'm afraid ...
Submitted by phani on March 27, 2007 - 10:57pm.... rejecting the idea of Srila Prabhupada's lectures during skykpecasts. First of all, if there's any audience to HDG's lectures, they will certainly benefit. And it's not as if we were trying to sell something, or collect money, so the idea of cheating doesn't arise.
And then these lectures could very well be managed in an interactive way: play some chunk of a lecture, then ask for questions or comments from the audience; explain whatever wasn't understood, then continue.
In this way such a lecture would fit well into the skypecast-medium and help many to understand vaisnava philosophy better and gain appreciation for Srila Prabhupada.
The more I'm thinking about this idea, the better I like it.

I really like this idea.

Unfortunately, I cannot get skype because I'm still using an old-fashoined Windows 98 computer from year 2000. However, that might change wihtin the year.
Also, as I am primarily a writer-actor associated with ISKCON since 1979, I have always said to bring Krsna consciousness down to it's lowest common denominator for the lay person. Make it super-simple.
For example, everyone is talking about the phenomena of "The Secret" and it's almost a cult. While many of the aspects are not new, a Krsna conscious person can bring to light many things to refute some of it's finer points.
On another level, after viewing "What the Bleep - Down the Rabbitt Hole" film which was about consciousness and quantum physics etc. and very slick, lots of computer graphics but very emotional (I want to do a Krsna conscious film like this with devotees and am trying to raise the money now) the bottom line of course is that unless we conquer birth, death, old age and diseases, the secret is no secret in the end. Things like this. Hare Krsna.
