Can we believe in evolution and a Creator?

In response to my twitter/facebook status "reading up on the current state of thinking on dog evolution, on shiva das' prompting", Braja-raj Suta writes:

i read some of your current posts s-p prabhu. interesting. but your above quote. there's gotta' be a joke in there. 'reading up on the current state of thinking on dog evolution.' the gbc's must be saying, 'what in the world is going on here?' 'dogs!? evolution?! jeesz.'

My reply:

Since I published Arguing against "Evolution" = Falling into a Trap a month ago, I've engaged in a lot of conversations with people (special thanks go out to Shiva das for recommending Denton's book) and read a lot of material. Here's an update based on that.

Language is important. Language can be used to obscure issues, or to clarify them.

Param Satya and Bronwyn doing their weekly Bible study

Every week Bronwyn, our local Jehovah's Witness, comes around and does a Bible study with Param.

This time I was taking lunch on the deck and listening to their conversation. Bronwyn asked Param: "How do we know that God's purpose for the universe will be realized?"

I think the answer that came out was something along the lines of: "Because of the multiple times that He says it will in the Bible."

Narasingha Guru das, author of an upcoming book about institutional dogma which addresses Darwin and evolution [read an excerpt], writes:

Philosophically, it is not hard to understand how Darwinian evolution and transmigration of the soul are incompatible - karma demands that all possible material situations are already existing for the soul to enter whatever body type is appropriate.

As previously discussed, there is as yet no experimental verification of the general theory of evolution. As well, there is a lack of a significant amount of transitional forms in the fossil record. Darwin himself pointed this out as a failure of the empirical evidence to support his general theory of evolution, and in the 150 years since while many more fossils have been discovered this empirical evidence has not materialised.

Reading on into Denton's book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis he has nicely made the distinction between the two different theories of evolution that Darwin put forward in his Origin of Species.
